Digital odometers are at least as susceptible to tampering as traditional analog clusters

Sadly, odometer tampering is rife among used vehicles exported from Japan.

Recent random examinations of vehicles at imported car dealerships in countries without cross-checking processes showed almost 75% had their odometer readings changed between the time they were purchased in Japan and the time they were advertised for sale.

For dealers, it means they’re able to maximise their profits by buying cheap, high-mileage vehicles and selling them for top dollar as immaculate low-mileage vehicles. For buyers, though, it means you’re not getting what you think you’re paying for. It can also mean a serious mechanical failure (more prevalent in higher mileage vehicles) may be just around the corner when you’re expecting many years of trouble free motoring.

For US$40, you will receive a scanned, independent, unaltered copy of the registration document for your vehicle, accompanied by a translation into English. For vehicles exported after 2007, it gives the most accurate record of your vehicle odometer reading at every subsequent re-registration (which occurs bi-annually) in Japan.

For US$40, you also have the option of requesting an auction sheet search. We will search past auctions for a copy of your vehicle’s auction sheet, which can not only provide the odometer reading, but also the general condition of the vehicle. It will give you with an insight into whether or not the vehicle has previously had any accident repairs or signs of visible rust, among many other things. If you request an auction sheet search, we will refund you in the event that we’re unable to locate any information.
